Dr. Joseph Dello Russo began his involvement in 1988, when he first discussed FDA phase I studies of the excimer laser with its inventor, Dr. Stephen Trokel. In the following year, Joseph Dello Russo took part of the first excimer laser correction seminar at Tulane University (New Orleans) with Dr. Marguerite McDonald, who was the first surgeon that ever performed excimer laser eye correction, and Dr. Trokel. Dr. Dello Russo was the first surgeon who placed an order for an excimer laser.
Between 1991 and 1996, when the FDA conducted a phase III clinical trial of the VISX excimer laser, Dr. Joseph Dello Russo was one of 10 professionals who participated in the study and, during that five-year trial period, conducted more surgery procedures than any other laser eye correction doctor in the United States. Dr. Joseph Dello Russo successful results provided solid data that contributed to the FDA's decision to approve the excimer laser for public use. In 1997, Dr. Joseph Dello Russo was granted the first special approval by the FDA to treat farsightedness using the new laser technology. Dr. Joseph Dello Russo became a leading authority on laser eye surgery and has since been interviewed numerous times by national and local TV networks and newspapers.
Dr. Joseph Dello Russo is both an innovator and an example to other ophthalmologists. His experience and work with laser vision correction technologies have been used to instruct hundreds of other doctors at national and international seminars.
